The Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka: A Region-by-Region Guide
Two monsoons mean there is always somewhere in Sri Lanka with good weather. Here is how to match your travel dates to the right regions.

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but its weather is shaped by two monsoons that affect different parts of the island at different times. Knowing which is which is the key to planning a great trip.
December to April: the south and west
The north-east monsoon brings rain to the east coast, while the south-west coast, the hill country and the Cultural Triangle are generally dry and sunny. This is the classic season for Galle, Mirissa, Bentota and whale watching off the south coast.
May to September: the east coast
When the south-west monsoon arrives, the east coast comes into its own. Trincomalee, Pasikudah and the surf breaks of Arugam Bay enjoy their best conditions, and the Cultural Triangle is usually dry.
The hill country
Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella are pleasant all year, with cooler temperatures than the coast. January to April usually brings the clearest mountain views.
Quick planning checklist
- Visiting in December to April? Focus on the south and west coasts, the hills and the ancient cities.
- Visiting in May to September? Pair the Cultural Triangle and hill country with the east coast.
- October and November are transition months, with showers possible anywhere.
- Book train seats and popular hotels early for December to April and July to August.
The best itineraries follow the weather, so the right route depends on when you travel.
