The Kandy to Ella Train: What to Know Before You Ride
One of the world's most scenic rail journeys, and one worth planning properly. Seats, sections, timings and our best tips.
· 5 min read
The railway from Kandy to Ella climbs through tea country, cloud forest and mountain passes. For many travellers it is the highlight of their trip to Sri Lanka.
Which section should you ride?
The full journey takes around six to seven hours. Many travellers split it: Kandy to Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya), then Nanu Oya to Ella on another day. The section beyond Nanu Oya is widely considered the most scenic.
Reserved or unreserved?
- Reserved seats in first, second or observation classes guarantee a place and sell out quickly in peak season.
- Unreserved tickets are available on the day, but carriages can be very crowded.
- Luggage is easier to manage if your driver takes it by road to meet you.
Our tips
- Book as early as possible for December to April and July to August.
- Sit on the side that gives you the valley views. Your guide will advise.
- Pack water and snacks, as services can run late.
- Keep valuables secure, especially near open doors.
